SPRING 2019

ISSUE III

From the Director, Susan Stickel:

Welcome to the third edition of our library newsletter. I hope you are enjoying reading all about the library and its programs. The library offers many ongoing quality classes and programs led by staff and members of our community. The Board of Trustees and I want to thank them for sharing their talent and especially their time spent preparing and presenting quality programming.

We are pleased to announce a new evening book club that began March 12. This group will meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30.
Come help us celebrate National Library Week April 7-13. There will be refreshments daily, and fines for late fees will be waived all week.
The very popular Easter Egg hunt will be held on Friday, April 19, at 11:00. Please remember to bring the children’s baskets.

This year’s Summer Reading Program will be held every Tuesday in the month of July. We will begin at 2:00 and dismiss at 3:30 each day. Early registrations will begin the last week of June. You may pick up registration packets then or on the first day of Summer Reading, Tuesday, July 2nd. Please hand in the registration sheets Tuesday, July 2nd so we have all the necessary contact information for your child.

As always, if you have a suggestion for a class or program, please let me know. I am always open to new ideas. For more information about the library please pick up a brochure and calendar of events at the circulation desk.

Have a wonderful Spring!

Susan

LITTLE KNOWN FACT

In the 1930’s President Franklin Roosevelt was trying to figure out a way to resolve the Great Depression. He created the Pack Horse Library Initiative to help Americans become more literate and have a better chance of finding employment. Female librarian’s on horseback delivered books and reading material to people on isolated mountain communities. At times the librarians had to walk to arrive at their destination if the terrain was too rough for horseback travel. The women were paid through the Works Progress Administration. This program ended in 1943 because employment skyrocketed during WWII.
